Getting Started and Rules

SO YOU THINK YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED
IN QUARTER MIDGET RACING,
BUT DON'T KNOW WHAT TO ASK!?!

The following FAQ's will shed some light on the commitment required to participate in the sport.

Q: What are the steps I should take to find out if we want to start a race team?
A: Here are my suggestions.
1. Come watch a race. While at the race track, walk around in the trailer area and go up to any race team and let them know you are checking out the sport. They will give you a brief overview of the cars and tools needed to support a team. You can also watch quarter midget racing on Youtube, click here.


Q: Where do I get a starter quarter midget car?
A: Most people buy a used car when getting started, to minimize the cost. The best place to find a used car is craigslist try searching in other areas most often Phoenix is a great place to start. Also check other quarer midget sites like QMA sites in Phoenix try searching Phoenix Quarter midget Racing and then find their classified page. The cost of a used car is generally related to it's age... the older the car, the cheaper it is.

Q: How much does it cost to get started?
A: An entry level budget to buy all the equipment you need, including a used car, trailer, and safety gear, is $3000-$4000. There are better deals a lot of times its more expensive in summer than it is in the winter I have seen great deals in the Winter with lots of parts for $1500 Many racers who have decided to get out of the sport often sell all their equipment as a package deal.

Q: What are the ongoing costs?
A: Tires are the only predictable consumable, which cost around $100 for a set of right side tires. For the junior novice driver, a set of right side tires can last all season. Of course a crash on the track can cause some damage, and repairs can cost as little as $14 for replacement radius rods, to over $200 for a whole new front axle, spindle, and rods.

Q: Do I need a big fancy trailer?
A: No. The big fancy trailers you may have seen at the track are typically operated by racing veterans who support several cars and drivers. Some race teams operate out of the back of a pickup truck. Some teams use open flatbed trailers, others use enclosed trailers, which are really mobile garages.

 2015 Kart Rules
Note:  Same as Aztec Speedway!

5HP Karts

1. Kart can be purchased or hand built, rear engine design.

2. Hand made kart chassis Kart to be made of minimum 1 inch outside diameter tubing with a minimum thickness of .083. NO CONDUIT!!!

3. All karts will weigh a minimum of 275 pounds, race ready with driver, after the race.

4. Minimum wheelbase is 48 inches. Measurement must be the same on both sides.

5. No adjustable camber or caster on the front axle. Camber and caster must be the same on both sides.

6. Kart must have a maximum of one 5 HP air cooled, four stroke, stock, gasoline engine.

A. Must have stock exhaust with muffler.

B. Must have stock camshaft, connecting rod, carburetor, head, flywheel, and keyway.

C. Cylinder bore maximum will be .035 oversize.

D. Maximum no load RPM is TBD.

7. Kart will be single speed, centrifugal clutch, with chain or belt drive to rear wheel/axle. Drives will be covered. NO RACING CLUTCHES!!

8. Kart will have front and rear axles rigidly mounted to frame.

9. Kart will have kill switch mounted on steering wheel. Labeled OFF.

10. Kart will have a solid metal belly pan under rider. Minimum .049 thick.

11. Kart will have working throttle and brake pedals. Brake to be disc or drum type.

12. Kart will have rear bumper extending rearward past the rear tires and be as wide as kart, with a minimum of two bars in it.

13. Kart will have a front bumper extending forward past front tires with a six inch hoop mounted vertical for foot protection. NO CONDUIT!!

14. Kart will have side kickers between the front and rear tires. These will extend outside of the front and rear tires. Minimum width of kicker is two inches.

15. Kart will have a roll bar behind driver going from right side to left side, that extends over the driver’s helmet by 4 inches. This shall be made of 1 inch diameter steed ltubing(NO CONDUIT) with a minimum thickness of .065 (or the factory tubing).

16. All bumpers, kickers, roll bars will be securely attached to the frame.

17. Kart will have a padded seat a minimum of two point seat belts.

18. Kart tires to be inflatable. Racing tires will have a durometer of 45. NO GROOVING!!

20. If a kart has an engine that has more horsepower than the others in the class it will have additional weight added to it. This will be determined by the officials.
